UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor Trojans (0-3-0) fell 2-0 to No. 17 Madonna (1-2-0) Wednesday evening in a physical contest that saw 33 total fouls at Turner Stadium.
The Crusaders scored their two goals just nine minutes apart in the first half as they took a 2-0 lead in the 35th minute. Justin Devlin attempted to cut into that deficit right before halftime, firing two shots that were set up by a late Madonna foul. Alas, the Crusaders escaped the half with their two-goal lead in hand.
The final 45 minutes of the match were much more even, with Taylor taking six of its 10 shots in the second half. Caleb Ballard brought the home crowd to its feet in the 63rd minute when his shot to get within a goal missed just left of the target.
Sam Spiegel was impressive all night long for the Trojans, as he recorded a season-high seven saves.
Brian Matipa and Justin Devlin had identical stat lines of three shots (one on goal) to lead TU's offensive attack.
Taylor travels to Grand Rapids, Mich., on Saturday, Sept. 2, to face Aquinas (1-0-0) at 4:30 p.m.
