MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – First-half goals from Carlos Sanabria and Brock Carpenter led the Trojans to their first CL win of the season in a narrow 2-1 victory over Mount Vernon Nazarene on the road.
Elias Munoz forced a turnover in the attacking half and quickly made a run down the wing before delivering a cross into the box, which found the foot of Carlos Sanabria in the middle of the box, who fired into the upper ninety.
Sanabria is on a heater for TU (5-4-1, 1-2-1 CL), finding the back of the net for the third time in four matches, all in Crossroads League play.
Sam Spiegel was phenomenal in goal as the Cougars searched for an equalizer, grabbing six first-half saves on his way to 11 total in the match.
As the clock ticked to halftime, the Trojans capitalized on a bad pass, with Carpenter intercepting it and forcing a save before firing the rebound into the back of the net for a two-goal lead going into the break.
Spiegel continued his terrific night with five more saves as the Cougars peppered the Trojan keeper and were turned away until cutting the deficit to one with under five minutes left in the match on a penalty.
MVNU (5-2-5, 2-1-1 CL) could not muster much else thereafter, and TU clung to an important 2-1 victory.
Taylor returns to Turner Stadium for a CL matchup against Huntington (9-3-1, 3-1-0 CL) on Saturday, October 12, with kick-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
