UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor University defeated the Concordia Cardinals (0-1-0) 5-0 in its season-opener at Turner Stadium Thursday night.
The game was delayed an hour due to lightning in the area, but the Trojans struck first in the 18th minute with the game winner coming off the leg of Chloe Sena. Teammate Libby Thomas, who was active all night long with her game-high five shots (two on goal), provided the assist.
Lauren Collins scored just three minutes later to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead, and the score stayed there despite 20 total shots taken in the half by Taylor's offensive unit.
Sena once again opened the scoring early in the second half. Eight minutes later, in the 61st minute, Audrey Grimm scored the first of her back-to-back goals, the latter of which was assisted by Sarah Mullins and made it 5-0.
A combination of dominant offensive play and tight defense from TU limited Concordia to just three shots on the night, all of which came in the first half.
Hannah Brackenbury started the game in goal and completed the first half, earning the win while making one save. Brianna Rawlings played the entire second half at goalie to complete the combined shutout.
The five goals scored by Taylor was matched or exceeded by the team just twice in all of 2022, and it marked TU's largest win over Concordia since a 6-0 win on Aug. 25, 2012. The two goals provided by Sena set a new career-high, while Grimm scored twice for the third time in her career.
The #RV Trojans (1-0-0) take to the road next week to face Northwest (0-0-0) on Aug. 24 in a neutral-site game hosted by Corban University in Salem, Oregon, at 5 p.m.
