Taylor Sets Multiple Season-Highs in Dominant Performance to End Road Trip
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #RV Taylor women's soccer team (4-1-2) closed out its extended three-match road trip with a 5-1 victory over Indiana Tech (2-4-0) on Saturday afternoon.
The first half was all Trojans, as they put up 21 shots (11 on goal) and six corner kicks while only allowing one shot attempt by the Warriors.
Sydney Thompson provided the fuel and the flame for the opening TU goal when she took the ball away from the Warriors in their own end. Thompson then made her way inside the top left corner of the penalty area before firing a shot that was knocked away by Indiana Tech's goalie directly back to Thompson, who promptly netted the second-chance try.
TU stayed on the offensive attack throughout the first half, and it found its second goal on a textbook combination from Libby Thomas to Chloe Sena. Thomas started the play with an interception of a pass near midfield. She then dribbled the ball up the left sideline before finding Sena in stride for the score.
With eight minutes remaining in the half, Morgan Fletemeyer had the highlight of the match with a 25-yard, left-footed strike that snuck in underneath the crossbar and over the outstretched arms of the Warriors' goalkeeper. The goal gave the Trojans a 3-0 advantage heading into the break.
Taylor kept the pressure on in the second half, scoring less than two minutes in on Sena's second goal of the day. Claire Massey led the break for TU near midfield prior to giving way to Audrey Grimm, whose cross to Sena gave her the assist.
Indiana Tech responded with a goal in the 54th minute to make it 4-1, Taylor, but the Trojans left the final mark on the scoreboard 20 minutes later with a freshman-to-senior connection. Appearing in just her second career game, Maegen Hill earned an assist from the corner with a perfect pass to Caroline Monberg, who finished the play with a goal.
TU set new season-highs in shots and shots on goal with 32 and 18, respectively. The goals by Monberg and Thompson marked the first of the season for both players.
Sena's two-goal performance was her second such game of the year, as she saw her team-high goal total increase to five. Additionally, the senior upped her career goal total to double digits with 11, and she surpassed 30 career points on the day.
Brianna Rawlings, who entered the game in goal for TU in the second half, saved three shots, while Hannah Brackenbury got the goalkeeper win despite not facing a single shot on target.
The Trojans look to extend their winning streak to three games when they host Georgetown College (4-1-1) at Turner Stadium in the final non-league match of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m.
