AUSTIN, Texas – Senior defender Claire Massey of RV Taylor was named a 2023 NAIA Women's Soccer Second-Team Academic All-American for her outstanding achievements both on the pitch and in the classroom. College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its academic all-American women's soccer teams for all NCAA and NAIA divisions on Wednesday, December 20.
Massey earned First-Team All-Crossroads League honors in 2023 with her three goals and two assists as a top-tier defender on the Trojans' squad. In her studies, Massey has excelled throughout her academic career with an outstanding 3.87 cumulative G.P.A. while majoring in psychology.
Massey's academic second-team honor puts the senior in elite company. Per CSC, 0.4 percent of all NCAA and NAIA women's soccer players garnered an academic all-American title this season. Furthermore, only 18 NAIA institutions had a women's soccer representative on one of 2023's all-American teams.
The Trojans were one of two CL women's soccer teams (Spring Arbor) represented on a 2023 academic all-American team. Of note, Massey is the first academic all-American for the TU women's soccer program since her sister, Riley, was named to the first team in 2021.
Taylor student-athletes have now combined for 134 CSC Academic All-American honors in school history, with 132 of those awards coming since 2010. The Taylor women's soccer program has now accounted for 11 CSC Academic All-Americans.
The 2023 first- and second-team academic women's soccer squads were comprised of 11 players each with one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards being named to each team. Honorees on the NAIA Academic All-America teams were voted on by CSC members from a dwindled pool of CSC Academic All-District award winners. Minimum requirements for the 2023-24 Academic All-America program include achieving sophomore status academically, maintaining a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.50 or higher and either playing in at least 90 percent of one's respective team's games, or starting in at least 66 percent of said games.
