Broadcast Highlights | Hubbard Windmill Dunk
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor (1-0) used a dominant 20-7 stretch to end the game and secure an 87-72 victory over IU-Northwest (0-1) on Saturday afternoon to begin the season with an impressive victory.
The Trojans had great performances from everyone on the team, highlighted by Jason Hubbard scored 27 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and provided three blocks on the defensive end to pace the Trojans. Gavin Yoon was electric on offense on his way to 20 points. Anton Webb announced his arrival with 10 rebounds and seven points while playing great defense and taking just a single shot.
The 27 points for Hubbard elevated him to ninth on Taylor's All-Time scoring list with 1,797 points over his four plus years at TU. Hubbard passed two Taylor players during Saturday's contest and now sits just three points away from 1,800 and 19 points behind eighth-place.
The game did not start well for the Trojans, falling behind 21-9 after just six minutes and change. TU used a 12-0 run to tie the game at 21 after Kaden Fuhrmann hit a jumper off a great pass from Jackson Ullom.
The rest of the half was back-and-forth, as neither team could grab a lead of more than three points until a steal by Hubbard culminated with a windmill dunk that sparked a 6-0 run that gave Taylor a five-point advantage with less than four minutes remaining.
TU went to the break ahead by four, 41-37. Hubbard collected 18 points in the first half to lead the Trojans, while Webb secured six rebounds off the bench in the first period alone.
After the break, TU stretched the lead to seven after a three-point basket by Yoon, was followed by an alley-oop from Fuhrmann to Hubbard that brought the crowd to its feet.
The bucket by Yoon was a preview of the rest of the half, as he caught fire in the second stanza, scoring 17 points on just six shots while nailing all three of his shots beyond the arc and adding two rebounds and two assists.
The game remained close for most of the second half, with the teams trading baskets until the final five minutes of action saw Taylor grab control of the game. The Trojans finished the game on a 20-7 run that eased the hearts of the Trojan faithful in the crowd.
As a team, TU shot an impressive 58.8 percent for the game and 41.2 percent from beyond the arc.
Taylor continues non-league action on the hardwood Wednesday, November 2, back inside Odle Arena against Aquinas (1-0), with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
