Hubbard Scores 2,000th point in Thrilling Upset Over No. 2 Grace
UPLAND, Ind. – Jason Hubbard continued his terrific Taylor career on Saturday by scoring his 2,000th point at TU in a thrilling 68-62 upset of No. 2 Grace (11-1, 4-1 CL).
Hubbard reached the milestone with a drive to the hoop that put Taylor up four with just over a minute left in the game. The Miamisburg native is the fifth Trojan to surpass 2,000 points in program history, with Casey Coons being the most recent TU player to achieve the feat in 2013. The senior is also the 60th player in CL history to reach the milestone, with Kyle Mangas being the most recent CL player to surpass 2,000.
Hubbard's game was on full display against the Lancers as he collected 27 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks in an impressive display. The senior scored 51 points in under 24 hours after putting up 24 in last night's Silent Night game.
The win over No. 2 Grace is the highest nationally ranked foe defeated under Josh Andrews and the first victory over a top-5 opponent since 2020 when TU defeated No. 4 Mount Vernon Nazarene inside Odle Arena.
The Trojans (6-5, 2-3) needed every one of those points today to keep the Lancers' comeback bid from fully materializing.
TU scored the first nine points while making all four of their shots and grabbing every available rebound to keep Grace from second opportunities.
The Lancers quickly responded to cut the lead to two before an 11-0 run powered by Hubbard Yoon regained some breathing room for Taylor.
A flurry at the end of the half, highlighted by one of Grant Niehaus' three triples sandwiched by two thunderous jams by Hubbard, resulted in the Trojans' largest lead of 16 going into the break.
Grace came out firing and started to slowly chip away at the lead, with the Trojan offense going cold in the middle of the second stanza.
The final six minutes saw the TU lead teeter between 2-5 points, with the Trojans countering with a bucket of their own every time Grace got it to within a score.
Taylor hit its free throws at an 80 percent clip for the second game in a row, which kept the Trojans ahead during the final minute to cap an impressive victory for TU.
The Trojans held the impressive Grace offense to a season-low 62 points and turned them over a season-high 17 times, including 12 steals by TU.
Taylor continues play on the hardwood Friday, December 16th, in a non-league game against Northwestern Ohio (3-8) on the road with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.
