RV Taylor Extends Unbeaten Streak to Seven in Draw at MVNU
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – RV Taylor (7-1-4, 2-0-2 CL) battled to a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested road matchup at Mount Vernon Nazarene (5-4-3, 2-1-1) Saturday evening.
With both teams entering play in the top half of the Crossroads League standings with two wins apiece, the game carried big implications nearing the halfway point of the conference schedule.
The Cougars came out on the offensive early, but a save by Hannah Brackenbury and a missed shot allowed the Trojans to go on the attack. Defender Claire Massey, who was aggressive early and often throughout the match, generated her own chances in search of a quick strike. That quick strike did come five minutes in, albeit in an unusual way.
Massey lined up for a corner kick and played the ball directly in front of the net, where it was bumped by a Cougar defender and deflected into the goal. Massey was given credit for the score on her own corner, good for her third strike of the season.
TU continued to have opportunities throughout the half, registering eight shots in the period, but a tough shot through traffic for the Cougars snuck in by the left post and tied the game at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Taylor slightly outpaced MVNU again in the second half in creating scoring opportunities, but neither team could find the back of the net again.
The Trojans finished the game owning advantages in shots 19-12 and in shots on goal 8-4. Massey put up a team-high five shots (two on goal) while Kiana Siefert also had two shots on goal in her first game action since Sept. 13 at Madonna.
Brackenbury recorded three saves on the night. The one goal allowed marked the 1th time in 12 games this season she has allowed one or fewer goals.
TU returns home on Wednesday, Oct. 11 to begin its only schedule true, two-game homestand of the season. It will face Huntington (6-5-1, 2-2-0 CL) with kickoff scheduled at 4 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
