JACKSON. Mich.– Goalkeeper Sam Spiegel of the Taylor men's soccer team finished his season on a high note with a shutout at No. 5 Grace (13-3-2, 7-1-1 CL) Saturday night in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals. That effort lifted the junior to the CL's weekly defensive player of the week honors for Oct. 30 through Nov. 5.
The honor marks the second such award for Spiegel in his career. TU's goalie was stellar on Saturday as he saved all six shots he faced on goal in the match. Making his performance even more impressive was that all six saves came in crunch time of an elimination game in the second half and overtime. Furthermore, the 110-minute shutout was against a Lancer team that entered Saturday's match averaging over two goals per contest, and it had only been held scoreless one other time all season.
Spiegel finished his 2023 campaign second in the Crossroads League in saves with 78, which brought his career total to 212. His shutout on Saturday was his third of the season and ninth of his career. The junior played every minute of goalie time for the Trojans during the season.
