Trojans Produce Strong Showing at ITA Regionals
MARION, Ind. - The TU men's tennis team competed on Thursday and Friday at the ITA Regionals hosted by Indiana Wesleyan. Four Trojans were part of the singles main draw while six represented Taylor in the doubles main draw. TU also placed six athletes in both the singles and doubles 'B' bracket.
Taylor picked up two wins in the opening round of the singles main draw on Thursday. Christen Jacquottet and Chase Bremner both scored two-set victories, moving them into the round of 32. However, both men found themselves matched up against ranked opponents in round two, and the tandem both bowed out in that second round.
David Sandi and Salvador Lo Cascio also played in the singles main draw but fell in straight sets in the opening round. Sandi rebounded with a win in the consolation bracket and advanced to play on Friday. In Friday's action, the rookie picked up another consolation bracket win before falling in a close three-set match.
TU found success in the 'B' bracket as well with Caleb Hoogerheide and Maity Spitters each picking up wins in their opener before falling in round two. Mercer, Wiet, Boer and Nafziger all bowed out, falling in consecutive matches.
In doubles play, Bremner and Jacquottet continued to shine for the Trojans by winning 8-3 against Leal and Chan from Indiana Tech. On Friday, the duo were unable to advance any farther, falling 8-6 in the ensuing round. TU's other main draw pairings fell into the consolation bracket as did two of Taylor's three teams in the doubles 'B' bracket. In Friday's action, Victor Cheng and Mercer along with Lo Cascio and Sandi both advanced to the consolation semi-final match and were paired up against each other. Lo Cascio and Sandi came out on top, winning 8-3 to advance to the final match. Due to a forfeit, the duo will not play on Saturday but have earned the championship title for the bracket.
Taylor now looks ahead to the final week of the regular season. The first of the Trojan's three matches will be a road contest at Goshen College on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m.
