Women's Tennis Drops Home Opener
UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor women's tennis team dropped their home opener on Thursday, falling to Lawrence Tech 5-0.
The Trojans (0-2, 0-1) were able to pick up a win in doubles with Kiersten Martin and Lauryn Riegsecker besting their LTU counterparts 6-3. However, with the new scoring rules, that point was not enough to gain a team point as No. 1 and No. 2 doubles fell 6-1 and 7-6 (7).
In singles action, Lawrence Tech quickly landed wins in the No. 1, No. 5 and No. 3 slots, which were all three-set matches to put the contest out of reach. TU's Julianna Hotmire battled in the No. 2 position to push Alice Radde deep into a three-set battle, but due to the match already being clinched, they were unable to finish their individual match. Martin also put together a strong performance in the No. 4 singles slot with a highly competitive 7-6(5), 6-2 final tally against Samantha Kohn.
"The ladies had a much better start in today's match," said Coach Jon Wegener. "Our energy was good, and we competed well in doubles and throughout most of the singles matches. The match was closer than the score but credit to Lawrence Tech for taking advantage of the opportunities they had. I'm confident we will bounce back tomorrow against Anderson."
There is little break for the Trojans as they are back in action Friday and Saturday. TU will enjoy home-court advantage over the weekend as they host Anderson on Friday followed by a bout with league foe Bethel on Saturday.
