Trojans Drop 13-11 Battle to Top-10 Saints
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor flirted with an upset over No. 7 Siena Heights on Thursday afternoon, but ultimately came up just two goals short on Wheeler Field in a 13-11 loss.
The Trojans threw the first several punches of the contest, jumping to a 3-0 lead in the first 5:30 of action against the seventh-ranked Saints (4-3, 2-1 WHAC). Unassisted strikes from Aidan Craig and Carter Prieditis were followed by Craig connecting with Wyatt Marshall on his first-of-four goals to give Taylor the early three-score advantage
TU then took 4-3 and 5-4 leads in the second quarter on goals from Reid Gerig and Alex Blum, before heading to the intermission tied at 5-5.
A quick surge from the guests to open the third quarter proved to be pivotal, as Siena Heights netted two goals in the first 38 seconds out of the break to open a 7-5 lead that it would not relinquish.
The teams traded goals the rest of the way, with Marshall's fourth goal of the game followed by a second from Prieditis making it an 11-10 TU deficit with 10:34 to play. TU would not score again until the final minute however, as SHU countered with two more goals, before a Gerig score in the last minute closed the scoring at 13-11.
SHU turned a 17-10 faceoff advantage into a 19 more shots than TU, giving the guests just enough to hold off the upset-minded Trojans.
Marshall led the offense for Taylor with four goals, while Blum, Prieditis and Gerig each netted two and Craig dished out three assists.
Trace Muylle was terrific in goal for the Trojans, repeatedly denying the SHU attack with 16 saves.
Taylor (2-7, 0-4 WHAC) will return to action on Saturday, April 8 for a noon start at No. 6 Aquinas (5-4, 2-1 WHAC).
