UPLAND, Ind. – The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its 2023 Academic All-District Team for men's soccer, and Taylor was well represented with five award winners – Caleb Ballard, Justin Devlin, Levi Kelly, Collin Maris and Sam Spiegel. Honorees are nominated by each institution's sports information department for exceeding high standards both on the field and in the classroom, and they must have achieved sophomore academic status, a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher and either play in at least 90 percent, or start in 66 percent, of his respective team's matches throughout the season.
Spiegel and Maris are both repeat selections, while Ballard, Devlin and Kelly claim the Academic All-District distinction for the first time in their respective careers.
Spiegel, TU's senior goalkeeper and a philosophy major, played every possible minute in net for Taylor during the season while maintaining the third-highest GPA on the men's soccer squad. Maris, a junior defender and finance major, also started every match for Taylor on the season and registered one goal and two assists at his position for four total points, which tied for fourth on the team.
Devlin, a junior transfer and sport management major who was eligible for nomination due to new rules that no longer prevent first-year transfers from earning a spot on the all-district team, has the second-highest cumulative GPA for Taylor men's soccer. The midfielder was also the lone TU player to be named Honorable Mention All-Crossroads League, as he led Tayor in both goals and assists with three apiece.
Kelly and Ballard both earn a spot on the Academic All-District team as sophomores who have recorded GPAs among the top four for TU men's soccer. Kelly, a midfielder and biology health sciences major, started all 18 games this season and has maintained a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA in his studies. Ballard, a finance major, made 15 starts in 18 appearances at the forward position and came in clutch throughout the season with two game-winning goals while tying for second on the team with six total points.
The men's soccer CSC Academic All-American recipients will be announced on Dec. 20, with CSC members voting from a selected pool of all-district honorees.
