Trojans Drop Two Contests at IWU Tournament
MARION, Ind. – The TU men's tennis team ran into two tough opponents on the second day of the IWU Tournament and fell to Aquinas College and Spring Arbor by final scores of 5-3 and 5-0.
Taylor (4-18) played their most competitive match of the weekend in Saturday's opener, which saw the Trojans fall 5-3 to the Saints of Aquinas College. Christen Jacquottet and Salvador Lo Cascio picked up a doubles win in the match, which allowed TU to go into singles play down by just one match. In singles, Caleb Hoogerheide and Maitland Spitters both posted dominant straight-set victories in the No. 4 and No. 5 positions, but it wasn't enough to lift the team to an overall win. Aquinas sealed the win by claiming a pair of three-set matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles slots and capped off the win with a victory on court No. 3.
In the nightcap, TU was unable to pick up a win against league foe Spring Arbor. The Cougars were able to pick up three wins in doubles action before landing 6-0, 6-0 wins in both No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
"Our match against Aquinas was one of the most competitive matches we have had this spring," said Coach Don Taylor. "We played some really good games, and the match could have gone the other way if we could have finished one or two of those close contests."
The Trojans were originally scheduled to play on Monday, April 15th, but because of a cancellation by IU Southeast, TU will jump to their final match of the spring, which is a battle against Ohio Northern. Taylor will travel to Ada, Ohio, for that contest on Wednesday, April 17th.
