INDIANAPOLIS – The Taylor men's tennis team opened the 2019 fall season on Saturday at the Marian University Doubles Tournament.
TU had twelve athletes in action over the course of the day playing in four different flights. In flight A, Christen Jacquottet and Andre Danelli took eighth place, dropping their three matches to opponents from UNOH, Judson and Marian.
In flight B, David Sandi and Salvador Lo Cascio took second place. The pair rolled to a 6-3 victory in the opening round and followed that with a narrow 7-6 (6) win over Marian's Hunter Sylvester and Will Boyer. That win put the duo into the championship match where the team came just short of the title by falling 6-4 to Greg Fulling and Camilo Mesa from Marian.
In flight C, TU fielded two tandems who came home with third and eighth-place finishes. Chase Bremner and Victor Cheng went 2-1 on the day, winning their opening match and their final contest by scores of 6-3 and 6-4 respectively to take third place.
Flight D was played in a round robin format. Caleb Hoogerheide and Seth Graves came away with a perfect 3-0 record. The duo was dominant, winning by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3. Maity Spitters and Nathaniel Boer also picked up a win in flight D.
"It was a really good day for us," praised Coach Don Taylor. "I was pleased with what I saw from our team. They competed well and worked hard. We played good tennis. We aren't where we want to be but I think it was a very good start to the season and hopefully if we continue to work hard and improve it should be a fun year."
Taylor will open the Crossroads League season on Tuesday when they make the short cross-county trip to face the 22nd-ranked Wildcats of Indiana Wesleyan.
