Trojans Outlast Spring Arbor
SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The TU men's tennis team found themselves in a marathon match on Tuesday against league foe Spring Arbor. Five hours and fifteen minutes after the 3:00 p.m. start, Taylor (5-2, 3-2) was able to outlast SAU 4-3.
"This was an excellent tennis match!" noted Coach Don Taylor. "It was a seesaw battle."
The Trojans got off to a great start by winning the doubles point thanks to 6-4 wins in both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Quickly after taking the 1-0 lead, TU continued to pile on the points with decisive wins coming from Chase Bremner and Christen Jacquottet in No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Taylor seemed to be well in control of the contest with a 3-0 lead. However, the Cougars rallied quickly to win three straight matches, bringing the score to an even 3-3.
The match rested on the result of the No. 5 singles match between Andre Danelli and Patrick Doerr. Danelli fell behind after a tightly contested opening set but rebounded and found a way to win set two in a tiebreaker 7-6 (5). From there, Danelli finished off the three-set marathon match with a 6-4 victory.
"Today was just a great match, and our guys played well," added Taylor. "I wish we would have closed it out a bit sooner, but when we come down to the last match and you have a guy like Andre step up and finish it, it's very rewarding."
TU's road tour continues this week as the Trojans head to Winona Lake to face the Lancers of Grace College on Thursday.
